I've spent a lot of time covering politics, working for the Associated Press, magazines, newspapers or for the candidates themselves. I've shot five presidents, a couple of dozen presidential candidates, assorted governors, senators, representatives, cabinet secretaries, mayors, legislators and several foreign heads of state. I've ranged from being alone in a room with President Bush (the secret service was watching through a window) to pushing and shoving with scores of photographers all trying to get the same shot. You are always trying to get something different, unique or unusual--and so is your competition.
In addition to dealing with the competition, you also have to deal with staff people, security people, press handlers and other assorted hangers-on who will either get in your way or be of wonderful assistance, or sometimes do both within a matter of minutes. Go figure!
